In 1955, the Association became one of the first mental health associations in the nation. Two years later, it became a member of the Tulsa Area United Way. Among the Association’s early programs were socialization activities for individuals returning home after hospitalization. The Association also offered a suicide prevention hotline, a teen crisis hotline, and advocacy for the development of a community crisis unit, where patients could be evaluated rather than being held in jail.
